Meet the new Dean of the College of Business from St. Petersburg College! In June, Dr. Emmanuel Hernandez-Agosto joined SPC as Business Incubator Manager and brings 15 years of higher education experience in entrepreneurship and community development and marketing, recruitment, curriculum and development. Accelerated learning programs for mature students. He holds an MBA from Universidad Metropolitana, and a PhD in Business Administration from Universidad del Turabo with a specialization in Management.
What drew you to this position at SPC?
In previous years, I was the Associate Dean directing the School of Professional Studies at the Universidad Ana G. Mendez in Puerto Rico. I remember the excitement and challenge that came with it. In this role I believe I see the opportunity to harness the intrapreneur in me, and through it I can be part of a community of partners who support upward mobility for our students.
How do you hope to make a positive impact on the college?
An immediate way we plan to make a positive impact is by focusing on helping minority groups learn and benefit from what a business degree can do for their future. We review our curriculum to ensure our relevance to all.
How did you come to specialize in entrepreneurship and community development?
I have always been interested in social enterprises. While working on my dissertation, I focused on studying business incubators and the impact these have on the communities in which they exist. This led me to work on some innovative projects that boosted the economy. Development. I’ve worked on a grant to develop a network of business incubators for small businesses in Puerto Rico, and I’ve also worked on various entrepreneurship training programs in the Bay County area led by students and myself. We have logged over 10,000 hours of service which has helped create over ten businesses. It was complete and very flexible.
What was your first job? What do you still learn from this experience?
If we are talking about paid work, I would say it was cleaning water tanks. In Puerto Rico, most homes use water tanks in case city service goes out. Working on roofs under the sun made me realize the value of people working in the business field. This experience made me realize the importance of work in general, but also how valuable work is in areas that don’t require a degree. He taught me about hard work, the importance of work ethic and how to treat others fairly.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my family, hiking, taking road trips around nature, and playing chess and volleyball.
What do you want from SPC and local communities?
I certainly don’t know them all, so I’m always looking for input from community members, students, and others who can help us shape the future of the College of Business and its impact on the communities we serve.
