A beer distributor in Allegheny City that has been closed for more than three years is set to reopen under a new name and owner.
The former Big Boys Brewery, 5743 Leechburg Road, closed in December 2018 after the death of owner Corey Snyder. Big Boys was originally started by Snyder and his brother Jay.
Last arrested was Gary Borello of Vandergrift, who bought it from Snyders.
New owner Ryan Zampogna of Allegheny Township bought it from Borello.
“It was for sale, so we bought it three years ago,” Zampogna said.
Zampogna shares a long-standing friendship with the Snyder family, owners of Snyder’s Bonfire restaurant next door to Big Boys.
Zamp’s Brew-Thru will open in two to four weeks, with a new sign on Route 56 featuring a Rhino driving by.
“That’s my nickname – Rhino,” Zampogna said.
Zamp’s operates as a full-service beer distributor, with drive-thru, walk-in, snacks, ATM, alcohol and lottery machines.
“There’s nowhere else to buy beer around here. People are saying good things. People either have to travel to Lower Burrell or Vandergrift for beer,” Zampogna said. “These days, people are looking for convenience. The driver is busy.”
Less than three miles from Zamp’s, Giant Eagle sells beer, but under Pennsylvania state law, grocery and convenience stores are not allowed to sell beer in the area.

For Zampogna, 41, who works in the construction business, this is his first job as a beer distributor.
He grew up in Lower Burrell and graduated from Burrell High School in 1999.
His wife, Kelly, supports the effort.
“It’s a great initiative. He is working very hard to make this a successful business,” she said.
Allegheny City Supervisor James Morabito said he’s excited to see another business in town.
“It’s a great sight. Another business our residents can support,” Morabito said. “This is just the beginning for many businesses coming to Allegheny.”
“Morabito is trying to bring new businesses to the city. I think we need it. He offered to help in any way,” Zampogna said.
Zamp’s will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. There will be limited hours on Sundays, but those hours have not yet been determined.
