The Whittier Tech Education Foundation is calling on golfers to participate in the next tournament and meet the needs of students.

Whittier Regional Vocational Technical High School media teacher Rich Porcelli said on a recent WHAV morning show guest that the foundation was organized with grants from the guidance department to provide students with holiday meals and gifts for their families and has grown over time.

“And, if we know one of our students, if they’ve had a house fire and they have nothing, they’ve lost everything, we reach out and help them start over. And give them what they need to get only the basic needs that they don’t think about like toothbrush, hair brush, etc. We’re helping them with that, and if they’re having trouble replacing OSHA-certified shoes in some shops, they have to be a specific shoe, toe style, etc. Sometimes it is difficult for these children to find those. “We will help them find this,” he says.

The tournament will be held on Monday, August 15, with check-in beginning at 7:30 a.m. and closing at 8:30 a.m. at the Georgetown Black Swan Country Club, 258 Andover St., Georgetown.

Last year, Porcelli said, the foundation was able to award $750 in scholarships to 14 students. Golfers interested in the “early bird” discounts must register by Sunday, August 7th. It’s $150 for individuals or $540 for four people. Starting Monday, August 8, the price will go up to $175 for golfers and $600 for four-wheelers. A lunch-only option is available for non-golfers. The Foundation is an Internal Revenue Service-recognized charitable organization.

Registrations can be made at foundation.whittiertech.org.

Porcelli is president of the Haverhill Kiwanis Club and thanked members for their participation in last Tuesday’s National Night Out hosted by the Haverhill Police Department at Swasey Field.

“The highlight of the night was when the state police helicopter had to fly by. A nice low pass with sirens. It was cool to see that and realize that. You’d think no one could hear the sound of the helicopter, but you would,” he says.

The Haverhill Kiwanis Club meets the first and third Tuesday of the month at noon at Maria’s Family Restaurant, 81 Essex St. in Haverhill.
