Fall camp is nearly here and Georgia Tech is entering Geoff Collins’ most pivotal season yet. There are questions about every position on the Georgia Tech football team, but there is one position that has a lot of experience on the defense.
The leaders on defense will be the linebackers. Two kids who played a ton last season, Charlie Thomas and Indy Ealy, are both back and while there is room for improvement for both, they are the two kids with experience and leadership on defense.
Thomas was an All-ACC honorable mention in 2021 with 70 total tackles and a team-high 10 for a loss. Thomas also had two cuts last season. He has been on the field for the Yellow Jackets since his freshman season and is expected to improve his play as a defensive leader this season. I think he’s in for an improved season for the Yellow Jackets linebackers.
Indy Ealy is back for another season as the Yellow Jackets’ starting linebacker opposite Thomas. Eley was perhaps the most impactful transfer for Georgia Tech last season, along with wide receiver Kyrick McGowan. Ealey finished second on the team with 88 tackles last season and started 11 games at middle linebacker. If healthy, I expect him to be a starter in every game.
The backups of these two guys are obvious to me as well, but there could be some competition. Trenilias Tatum saw some action as a freshman last season and made his first start against Notre Dame last year. He was one of the top recruits in Georgia Tech’s 2021 class and should see more time this year.
Demetrius Knight II is a guy who is ready to compete in fall camp. He was part of the first recruiting class Collins put together and looks like a safe bet to be a key backup this season.
Others to keep an eye on pushing for more prominent roles as a backup or special teams player are Tyson Meiguez, Katavian Franks, Kyle Eford and Taylor McAuley.
2022 Linebacker Depth Chart Projection
Starters: Charlie Thomas and Andy Eley
Backups: Trenilyas Tatum and Demetrius Knight II
Overview:
I think this is a defensive depth chart projection that I feel very confident about. Thomas and Eli have a lot of experience and will be counted on this season. Tatum and Knight have shown enough flashes to where I feel safe as the starting backups. But with how poorly the defense played last year, anyone has a chance to steal either a starting job or a backup role this season.
