ST. george – Longtime Utah Sportscaster Rod Zundell has been named director of broadcast and multimedia content for Trailblazer athletics and will be the new radio voice for football and men’s basketball.

UT Athletics last month announced a five-year multimedia partnership with Canyon Media Corporation, Utah Tech Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Ken Bezer announced Monday. Beginning this fall through the 2026-27 season, all Trailblazer football and men’s basketball games, including comprehensive pregame and postgame coverage, will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Southern Utah, with Zundel announcing the primary play-by-play.

Along with full radio coverage, Zundell hosts a live 30-minute weekly coaching show that airs on Fox Sports Southern Utah. He also oversees the production of several weekly Trailblazer student-athlete, coach and team online video feature stories along with other digital content throughout the year.

“We are thrilled to welcome Rod to Trailblazer Nation,” said Beezer. “Rod has been a well-known and highly respected sportscaster and journalist in Utah for decades, and he brings instant name recognition and credibility to our program. Adding Rhode to UT Athletics is another step as we continue to grow into an NCAA Division I program.He said.

Zundel has been a fixture on Utah television screens for more than 35 years, nearly 24 of those years were spent at KSL-TV in Salt Lake City, where he served as both anchor and reporter for Eyewitness Sports and host of SportBeat. Saturday and Sunday programming from 1995-2019. During the summer he hosted the KSL 5 Golf Utah Show and was the host of KSL 5 Outdoor Adventures.

The 2007 Utah Sportscaster of the Year winner has worked at KUTV in Salt Lake City and KIFI-TV in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Zundel also provided play-by-play commentary for then-Dixie State football and Southern Utah University football, or KCSG-TV, in St. George, and most recently was the play-by-play voice for Bear River High School athletics. Providing local radio and live streaming as well as radio play-by-play calls for many Cache Valley Prep sports programs.

A native of Tremonton, Utah, Zundell graduated from Weber State University with a bachelor’s degree in public relations in 1990. He was awarded the Association for Professional Journalism Award for Excellence in Journalism.

I’m so excited to be part of the herd.”

Home to 15 intercollegiate athletic programs, Utah Tech University will begin its third year of transition to the NCAA Division I level this fall and is a member of the Western Athletic Conference. Last June, the WAC Board of Directors voted to allow UT to participate in all conference championships beginning with the upcoming 2022-23 season.
