After the first Bank of Hawaii chairman, President and CEO Bob Harrison launched the 9th annual. Hawaiian business Leadership Conference With opening remarks on leadership and Hawaii’s ever-changing business climate, Servco Pacific President Rick Ching and Howard Hughes Corporation Hawaii President Doug Johnston joined the conference for the conference’s opening panel session: “This is the future you need. Get ready.” Moderated by Hawaiian business Editor Steve Petranik, these three inspirational leaders discuss talent retention, corporate culture, trial and failure, remote work and the importance of building a value agenda.
Petranik led the discussion on each topic by providing a familiar quote for C-suite executives to discuss in depth. “A strong corporate culture is based on trust,” Harrison said, “We want to work hard and play hard for each other.” Trust comes from your willingness to step in and help build a better organization where people want to work, even if it’s not your job.”

The team recognizes that today’s workforce doesn’t want to be micromanaged, but appreciates the flexibility to collaborate with colleagues wherever they can, with remote work on the rise. Leaders can come from anywhere in an organization, so the secret to creating a successful modern workforce starts with the CEO and other leaders who are committed to living the culture and values of the organization. With the pandemic forcing businesses to test new processes and procedures that haven’t been done before, the need to allow people and teams to fail, learn and adapt has become increasingly important.

“When it comes to preparing for a better future in Hawaii, we have to decide what kind of jobs we want to create and what kind of community we want to support,” Harrison said during the panel’s audience question segment. “And we’re not going to achieve that by doing the same thing we’re doing now. We need to practice self-examination, face hard questions, and bring flexibility to our faith through strong faith.
