The Manila Times took a breather from the cover of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s first State of the Nation Address to get a quick glimpse of the much-anticipated “fashion event” that served as a sideshow to the annual event. A back seat to the Covid-19 pandemic.

None other than Vice President Sara Duterte’s House of Representatives outfit is talking. Bagobo Tagabawa traditional dress fashionistas are caught between super-likes and dislikes. Inday Sara Being Inday Sara – casual and sassy – she definitely rocked the indigenous look and should be commended for choosing an outfit that honored her Mindanaoan roots.

Figuratively speaking, the former Davao City mayor to vice president sent a loud and clear message that she will continue to be united with them even as she takes the national post. A style that stands out in general, but it’s because of the high feather on her head that she could probably pull it off.

Neophyte Sen. Marc Villar and his wife Emmeline were the headliners on the Senate red carpet this morning in a simple yet elegant style. Lifestyle is still digging the pots behind the designer/s behind the barong and the modern Filipino long dress covered with it, but every part is a winner. Their impeccable choice of fabric – perhaps the most delicate pineapple fiber – already draws high marks for each garment, not to mention expert needlework on a material that can easily hang awkwardly if not handled carefully. Bravo! Brilliant style indeed!

Congratulations to Senator Nancy Binay and her forever friend Randy Ortiz for a job well done this year! Binay’s traditional terno, which has always been the first to get a thumbs down or turn into a meme in past SONAs, is right — “tamang tama” as we say in Filipino. There’s nothing shabby about this all-over-pina fabric dress and the sweet and intricate calado sampaguita embroidery. good job! Great style for you, Senator Nancy.

Senator Risa Hontiveros stood out as Baroti Sai at the wedding as a Ning. Joel Acebuche’s design from the Aklan Pigna is very dated, and the Senator’s hasty Pussod is even more dated.

Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara and wife Tootsi are pretty much a staple in the Senate. Eyes are always on the senator’s better half for her simple yet elegant look. Even from her college days, she was a stunner in a dress, but for this SONA – well, let’s just say that maybe one is out. She appeared to be wearing a slightly too busy piece with a voluminous lace motif that already went from top to bottom and still finished with a ruffled hem.

Senator Francis “Cheese” Escudero is as bold as ever as he makes his way back to the Senate with his famous wife, an evangelist at heart. Her sophisticated modern mid-calf terno is Mark Bumgarner, of course. The standout style is without question, the ruched bodice and embroidered skirt in printed white is simply classic, and Evangelista’s long flowing hair and center parting make her look as perfect as ever with that casual and effortless touch.
