In the year Given the current travel climate in 2022, it’s a matter of “if not if” when it comes to delays or flight cancellations, unfortunately for frequent flyers. Travelers injured in such incidents are properly compensated, but compensation can be a bit explosive. With that in mind, here’s a guide on how to get compensation for flight delays and cancellations from major airlines in the US

American Airlines

According to the American Airlines website, in the event of a delay or cancellation, the airline will try to rebook passengers on the next flight. However, passengers are eligible to request a full refund instead of a flight change. To do this, travelers must go to this website and enter their last name and ticket number to start the process. The website says they are currently experiencing an unusually high number of refund requests and travelers should allow 7 business days for refunds if they paid by credit card.

Delta Air Lines

Like American, Delta also offers a variety of refund options, such as rebooking another flight and eCredit for the affected fare. However, passengers with a cancellation or delay of more than two hours may cancel their flight and receive a full refund to the original form of payment. Customers who have purchased non-refundable tickets are also eligible for refunds as specified by the Department of Transport. To start their refund process, travelers must go here and submit their travel details.

United Airlines

United’s policy states that in the event of delayed or canceled flights, travelers may be required to request a travel credit or for a ticket that is non-refundable or has limited refunds. Travelers can postpone their trip without penalty. Refund requests can be initiated here, and depending on the payment method used, the process can take up to 20 days.

Southwest Airlines

Although Southwest Airlines’ different fare types and “refundable versus non-refundable” classifications are confusing, travelers are still eligible for a full refund regardless of the type of ticket they purchased that was canceled or significantly delayed. Travelers can start the refund process here.

Alaska Airlines

Regardless of the type of ticket purchased by the customer, Alaska Airlines passengers are entitled to a full refund in the event of a canceled or significantly delayed flight. While alternative flight options may be offered, there is no obligation to accept these, and returning to the original source of payment is optional for passengers. Passengers go to this page and enter their details to start the compensation claim.

JetBlue Airlines

Passengers on flights delayed between 61 and 119 minutes may be rebooked on another JetBlue flight on the same day, the day before, or the day after your original flight at no additional charge or refunded with a flight credit. For delays of more than 2 hours, travelers may receive a full refund toward the original payment, credit, or change their flight. Flights canceled by the airline provide travelers with the same return options, which can be applied here. Passengers canceled within 4 hours of departure may be charged additional compensation – in this case the airline will contact the passenger.

Spirit Airlines

According to Department of Transportation regulations, Spirit Airlines is required to provide an alternative flight option or a full refund to passengers affected by flight cancellations and significant delays. To start the application process for this compensation, travelers must go to this website and fill in their flight details. Refunds may take up to 20 business days to process.

North of the border – Canada Air

North of the border, things are a little different, but travelers on Air Canada flights are entitled to refunds for delayed or canceled flights. Travelers have the option to return if their flight is canceled or delayed by more than 3 hours from their original departure or arrival time, or if the airline connects with your itinerary. Travelers can start the refund process by going here and entering all relevant information.
