After a series of riots, South Side business owners and residents say things have calmed down.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The weekend is here, and that’s been a stressful time for the past few months on the South Side.

After months of gunfire and violence, the South is suddenly quiet.

“It’s been quiet here on the south side for the last two weeks,” District Judge Jane Ricciardi said. “The shooting was peaceful, no reports of gunshots, crashes, no noise.”

Some of the pictures show that the footpath population has decreased significantly. And for the past two weeks there have been no shootings and few if any clashes.

The bar’s owner, Rich Kupka, credited Mayor Ed Gaines and the police presence for restoring it.

“Ganey has done a good job of bringing in more cops, overcrowding,” Kupka said. “Young cops with older cops during crowd dispersal. It’s working great.”

But District Judge Gene Ricciardi cites another reason.

“One thing we can say is it’s been quiet here since Foxtel and Skybar closed,” Ricciardi said. “So there’s a relationship?”

Two weeks ago, Foxtail-owned Skybar voluntarily closed after a video of a woman allowing herself to be sexually assaulted went viral. The bar’s owners met with investigators from the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office and Pennsylvania Liquor Control Enforcement agents last week.

Ricciardi is questioning why LCE hasn’t issued any citations, but it’s unclear whether any agency will take action.

In a statement, the LCE said “obscene acts and indecent exposure do not fall within its enforcement powers,” while the city police said there was no investigation while talking to bar owners about their operations.

“Myself, I’d like to see that bar permanently closed,” Ricciardi said.

But even when things are quiet, the south side can be a little quieter. Business is down and those business owners want to see responsible customers come back.

“Have fun, enjoy the music, have some drinks, enjoy the food, but don’t bring your criminal behavior to Pittsburgh’s South Side,” Ricciardi said.

Skybar did not return a request for comment on Friday.
