The Center for Media Research says “second censorship” allows big tech platforms to protect Americans from content that might reach them on social media.
MRC founder Brent Bozell oversees the organization’s Free Speech America Censor Track database, which tracks the results of second-hand censorship. Seven major tech platforms – Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn and Spotify – found that data from users was captured a staggering 144,301,713 times in the first quarter of 2022 alone.
The study defined secondary censorship as “the number of times social media users’ information is kept from them” by Big Tech. The team “calculated the effect of second-hand censorship by adding up the number of followers that each account had during each censorship issue recorded during the quarter,” Brian Bradley and Gabriela Parisi of Free Speech America.

“In the first quarter of 2022, the results of second-hand censorship include only cases of censorship for which we have obtained or been informed. As such, it represents a fraction of the total volume of second-hand censorship,” Bradley and Paris added. “Big Tech’s lack of transparency means that an untold amount of censorship takes place every day – beyond what is shown in this report.”
Bozell joined “Fox News @ Tonight” with Shannon Bram on Wednesday to discuss his findings.
“Social media is the future of communication whether we like it or not. The censorship of conservatives and Christians, especially conservative Christians, through big technology is a big problem,” Bozell said.
“It’s huge because it’s affecting the public square like never before in American history. So how important is this? Those of us who were looking at censorship were looking at it from the perspective of the producers. We. We’ve gone in, we’ve identified about 4,000 cases that are examples of censorship,” he continued. We didn’t look at it from the consumer’s perspective. What is the effect of that censorship?”

“In the first three months of this year, we looked at 172 cases, 172 confirmed, confirmed censorship, then we looked at how many times that information was withheld from the American people because of those 172 actions, 140 million times information was not available. Because of 172 acts of censorship, it didn’t reach the American people,” Bozell said.
Brehm suggested that many liberals are being censored, pointing to comments on Facebook’s top-performing posts that conservatives are “doing very well” on the platform that liberals use to make their case. However, Bozel disagreed.
“The worst case actually came from Facebook.” “Facebook has over 80 instances.”

Bozell went on to make it clear that he believes this is a partisan issue.
“When was the last time you heard of a liberal complaining about being censored? It just doesn’t happen. But conservatives in the field are being censored right now. That’s the point. That number is small. It scratches the surface.” he said. We only looked at three months… We didn’t look at the people who were already censored… If we had looked at the censorship issues three months ago, there would have been billions of data that have not been accessed yet. American people because of censorship.
