(CNN) — It’s been an unusual couple of years for the aviation industry. After months of pandemic-related earthquakes, travel has returned with less fanfare and less fanfare, as many international airlines and airports grapple with cancellations and delays.

In the midst of this chaotic travel season, AirlineRatings.com, an Australian-based aviation safety and product rating agency, has released its annual roundup of the world’s best airlines.

Taking the top spot for the second year in a row is Qatar Airways, AirlineRatings.com said, citing the carrier’s commitment to flying for the past two years. Qatar Airways wins Long Haul – Middle East/Africa award.

“Qatar Airlines’ move to stay afloat in the wake of the pandemic has made it the world’s largest international airline and turned a profit — the only major airline to do so,” AirlineRatings.com editor-in-chief Jeffrey Thomas told CNN. road trip.

As well as profitability, the AirlineRatings.com team of editors reviewed each airline’s fleet age, environmental and safety credentials, passenger reviews and product offerings.

Air New Zealand has topped the Qatar Airways Airline Ratings list six times in recent years and came in at number two last year. For 2022, Air New Zealand is also recognized by AirlineRatings.com as the carrier with the best premium economy and economy options and the best option for long-haul travel in the Pacific region.

Number three on AirlineRatings.com’s list is Etihad Airways. The United Arab Emirates-based airline, which was awarded the Local Airline of the Year award, said Thomas is a “benchmark” for cutting emissions.

The fourth airline was Korean Air, which won the Cargo Airline of the Year and Long Haul – Asia awards, while Singapore Airlines, which won Best First Class and Best Lounge, rounded out the top five.

AirlineRatings.com highlights the top budget airlines for 2022, although these low-cost carriers are not ranked. Instead, they are listed in alphabetical order: Allegiant Air, AirAsia, EasyJet, Jetstar, Flair, FlyDubai, Ryanair, Scott, Southwest and VietJet Air.

Thomas told CNN Travel that while the results reflect the continued impact of Covid-19 on aviation, the recent delays and cancellations have not affected the rankings.

“The problem with the flight was an isolated incident and played no role,” Thomas said, adding that current conditions were also “not the case with most airlines.”

Experts pointed out that the current problems are related to the lack of workers, the airport issue, labor relations and the weather.

Overall, Thomas sees the rating as a positive step for the travel industry today.

“The results highlight the very high standards it offers to travelers,” he said.
