The tools and The technology used to map the world is constantly evolving, and we take it for granted that we can see any part of the world in detail on our phone or laptop screen.
As more and more information is gathered and digitized, another opportunity opens up.
Whether you are exploring urban sprawl, or wanting to know what your street looks like before the turn of the millennium, here are three key resources you should use.
Google Street View
Can be used to view addresses and locations via Google Street View, but did you know that you can use it to get back in time? It is clear that Google was actually limited in the days when street viewing took place, but this is now decades in some areas. Moreover, you can now find historical photos on both web and Google Maps mobile apps.
Drag Peg’s person to the bottom right of the map interface to find Google Maps on the web (Roads with Street View will be highlighted in blue when dragging). When you drop a Peg person, they will show you the latest street level images for that area.
Look in the upper left corner. Click the date to view the options provided in the timeline slider and drag it back and forth to view images from the dates in the preview window. For full view, click the magnifying glass or images.
Open Google Maps on Android or iOS and get the same functionality, which allows you to see how areas have evolved over time. Tap on this road, then tap the discarded PIN card below to get to Street View. Once you have loaded the full screen, re-open the card.
Old Maps Online
There are various map archive ports on the web, but old maps are one of the most widely used online, and they are a good starting point wherever you are looking. Click Search to get started or select Explore old maps to see what’s available in your area.
