According to a person familiar with the matter, U.S. President Joe Biden has approved Lina Khan, a major critic of the power of large technology companies, to chair the Federal Trade Commission.
Biden’s decision elevates the 32-year-old professor at Columbia University School of Law to a powerful antitrust role in his administration, as legislators in Congress vote to repress on anti-competitive behavior among major U.S. technology groups.
Khan’s appointment as FTC president came on the same day it was confirmed by the United States Senate. for a seat to the five-member committee.
“Congress created the FTC to safeguard fair competition and protect honest consumers, workers, and businesses from unfair and misleading practices. I hope to keep this mission strong and serve the American public, ”he wrote in a tweet Tuesday.
Khan is one of the most prominent American academics who has criticized major U.S. technology companies, from Amazon to Facebook and Google, for abusing their market power and has demanded government action to curb them.
