As a long federal holiday, most Americans get a three-day weekend and a break from their normal Monday routine in recognition of Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is intended to celebrate and honor those who have died while serving in the U.S. military, and many businesses and organizations close in observance. However, unlike other federal holidays, the country does not shut down completely. Because more people choose to travel on vacation, hundreds of thousands of people are still required to work, especially in the service industries.

Here’s your Houston area guide to businesses staying open and closing for the holiday.
