Business Summary: Couple Gets Walking Pool Donation, Salisbury Communications Department Honored

SALISBURY – Safe Step Walk-In Tub has donated and installed a walk-in tub for Otto and Patricia Borden, a donation aimed at improving the safety and comfort of veterans and retirees in communities across the country.
The Bordons live on Maple Ridge Circle in Salisbury.
Otto Borden, a US Navy veteran, and Patricia Borden, a retired nurse’s aide, have dedicated their lives to serving others. Now the company has decided to return to them. Safer Steps hopes to provide relief from a variety of bone, hip, leg and back problems the Bordens face. This donation is part of the Safe Step Cares program, an initiative to honor individuals and communities across the country. The company has provided more than 60 walk-in pools to individuals over the years.
“We have the opportunity to contribute to the safety of Otto and Patricia Borden, who gave their lives to help others,” Ben Faulk, president of Safe Step Walk in Tub, said in a news release. “As a leader in the swimming pool industry, SafeStep believes in creating a safe and comfortable environment for everyone. We understand the importance of maintaining mobility, independence and dignity. It is an honor to support Borden in their daily lives.”

The City of Salisbury’s Communications Department has received three state awards of excellence
Salisbury – The City of Salisbury was among 25 North Carolina states to receive recognition at the North Carolina City and County Communications (NC3C) 2023 Excellence in Communications Awards.
Salisbury has received marketing communications awards for the following projects:
- First Place: Crisis Communication, Livingstone College Crisis Communication
- First place: foreign newspaper, lamp
- Second Place: Graphic Design, Reels and Riffs: Film and Music Series
“It’s a real achievement to win an award in this wonderful field of communication,” NC3C President Stacey Galloway said in a news release. “Our sincere congratulations to the NC3C Board for their hard work to reach their communities in innovative and effective ways.”
The awards were announced May 4 at the NC3C Annual Conference in Wilmington. All 144 awards program entries were judged by professional communication peers from the Minnesota Government Communication Association. The mission of North Carolina City and County Communicators is to foster professional development and networking among local government communications professionals. Carolina Caregiver has launched a Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) program to provide training and job placement services.
The nine-week training, held at the nonprofit’s Newton campus, is taught by licensed nurse educators, preparing students for the North Carolina CNA certification exam. Students are paid during their training and upon successful completion of the program receive a certificate and a position with Carolina Caregiver. Eight students successfully completed the program, which began in March, and were hired as permanent employees.
“We’ve found that many people who want to help others and want to start a career in health care are held back by their financial situation,” Carolina Caring President and CEO Dana Killian said in a news release. “Our CNA training programs help remove some of these barriers. Not only is the training paid for, but we also provide books and other materials.
