Cairo, May 4, 2010 More than 70 Egyptian designers showcased their collections on and off the runway at the first edition of the four-day Egypt Fashion Week, which kicked off on Friday.
Organized by the Egyptian Fashion and Design Council (EFDC) and coordinated by the Egyptian Ministry of Planning and Economic Development, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Development, it was held in various Egyptian museums. , major shopping centers and shops.
“By organizing this event, we want to showcase and guide Egyptian designers, artisans and manufacturers to meet international standards and on the local and international fashion scene,” said Marie-Louise Bishara, chairman and co-chair of the Egyptian Apparel Export Council. “Through this event, we are sending a message that Egypt is ready to export fully designed and manufactured products to the international market,” she added.
EFDC said in a statement that the event drew design inspiration from Egyptian culture and acknowledged that agriculture was the foundation of ancient Egyptian civilization.
“But we don’t want to focus on our past and the wealth of achievements and innovations, but instead we want to see and show the world what is the collection of innovators, artisans and industry leaders who have created the DNA of Egypt today” to the statement.
In addition, the fashion event aims to promote Egypt’s fashion and design industry by establishing close ties with international fashion councils, industry leaders and international media outlets, the organizers said.

“Of course, I came to learn. When people come to a country, they usually come with a message, but I came to learn,” Aden Roberts, director of international education at the Italian Accademia Garment and Moda, told Xinhua.
He said he was interested in learning about Egyptian design, textiles, crafts and artisans, and wanted to see how things were being made and produced in the country.
“I had the chance and opportunity to understand other cultures and the fashion sense of the local people,” he said.
Meanwhile, the famous Egyptian fashion designer Shahira Fahmy, who was present at the event, is proud to showcase the heritage of Egypt by portraying traditional fashion in a modern style.
“This week is very important because it is celebrated in the same way as the international fashion weeks, where more than 70 Egyptian designers are present in New York, Paris and London to present their creative ideas. This event will have a great impact on the Egyptian industry in the coming years,” she told Xinhua.
