Silkworms live on after harvest because skin care startup Seresilk has developed ethical products

Skincare brand Ceresilk is on a mission to create an ethical silk industry and as the first step towards achieving that, it has developed chemical and cruelty free silk products.

Taylor Battistella founded Seresilk in 2021, working with silk since the age of 12. His first business was selling silkworms to schools and retail customers.

After learning about the medicinal benefits of natural fibers for skin care, Battistella decided to turn his knowledge into skin care and Seresilk was derived from the ancient Greek word ‘Seres’ which translates to ‘land of silk’.

“Seresilk was created out of a desire to create a hassle-free skincare routine that harnesses the amazing healing properties of silk,” said Battistella.

The silk trade originated in China, where the women on the silk farms are known to have the softest hands in the world, and despite the effort of their manual labor, the silk thread gets the credit.

Ceresilk uses cruelty-free and chemical-free Ahimsa (Hindi word for peaceful or not harming living things) Silk that is harvested without harming the silkworms.

The company’s products include Gentle Silk Cleanser, Pure Silk Exfoliator, Silk Night Serum and Silk Night Cream.

Traditionally, harvesting silk means the death of silk moth larvae (coconuts are boiled in hot water), animal welfare activists, along with the founder of modern India, Mahatma Gandhi, criticized it, which led to the creation of Ahimsa silk.

“Silk is traditionally harvested using cruel rearing methods. However, our silk is unique and not only Australian, it’s completely cruelty-free,” says Battistella.

Ceresilk uses reusable packaging, and as a way to give back, the brand has partnered with three charities.

Online sales were collected by shoppers who were given the option to vote on who the donations would go to. That’s the money collected. Each option is allocated pro-rata each month based on the percentage of votes cast.
