Gainesville, Fla. – No. 16 Florida women’s tennis held off a late charge from No. 19 Georgia Tech to win 4-1 in Saturday’s NCAA Tournament second-round match at the Alfred A Ring Tennis Complex at Linder Stadium.
Florida improved to 20-4 all-time in its second NCAA Tournament appearance, and advanced to the round of 16 for the second straight season and 17th time under a head coach. Roland Thornqvist.
Carly Briggs/Rachel Doro Georgia Tech’s Monica Dedage/Kate Sharabura opened the match with a win at No. 2. The two players, who are ranked 67th in the country, won their 10th doubles of the season and announced their fifth win in the last 6 games.

Dudeney continued her progress from doubles to singles on court three. The 99th-ranked singles player notched her 16th doubles win of the season with a 6-1, 6-2 win over #102 Mahak Jain for a team-leading 6-2 win to rank fifth in two seasons.

The Gators will play the winner of No. 1 North Carolina vs. No. 33 Old Dominion in the Round of 16 on either Friday, May 12 or Saturday, May 13.

Another amazing match with drama. We talked about it today after we beat North Florida, it’s going to be more complicated today because Rodney (Harmon’s) team, Georgia Tech teams are great competitors and very smart and have the ability to find those cracks. Sometime and they went inside. Halfway through we thought we were on top by singles and after thirty minutes it was high drama, credit to Rodney and how he coaches and how the players adapt. We had to beat them. They didn’t want to give it to us, so you saw that today. I thought we were starting to play doubles at a higher level again. A little flip on one makes it 4-1, and the next thing you know it’s 4-3. Their credit is back on track. It’s very important for us to play aggressive doubles, which means we want to be active, we want to hit the ball and move, we want to serve and move. Sometimes when you express, you keep hitting the ball. We may have done that for a few minutes, but we got right back on the horse and I was proud to see how we closed out that double point, which will be crucial in these highly competitive matches. Individually, we used our feet when we had to, extended marches when we had to. Sarah is in tears. She’s playing really well, really clearly and Alicia plays in high quality. We had contributions from all six of our singles players this weekend, and I’m very pleased with how the weekend went.
