Travel booking company eDreams Odigeo is testing Google’s generative AI capabilities on online platforms, the companies said on Thursday.

Spain-based eDreams was one of the first partners to be announced after Google opened up its generative AI technology to developers in March, shortly before Microsoft released Bard as a competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The partnership is part of the Google Cloud AI Trusted Tester Program. A Google spokesperson said there were no details to share about other companies participating in the program.

The booking company owns four online travel agency brands – eDreams, GO Voyages, Opodo, Travellink – and the metasearch engine Liligo. The company claims to complete over 17 million customer registrations annually. It works with more than 690 airlines and 2.1 million hotels.

In partnership with Google, eDirems says Odijo plans to use generative AI to “improve productivity, streamline development processes and envision customer engagement.”

This includes developing a range of products that enable customers to interact with Genitive AI “agents” at various stages of the travel journey, including planning, booking and customer service. The plan is that the system, powered by generative AI, can personalize communications based on data on individual customers.

The company said it has been using its own generative AI models, including custom-designed routes in some cases.

“The sophisticated AI platform we’ve developed has given our customers a seamless personalized experience while maintaining the highest levels of privacy. And we’re just getting started. By partnering with a global leader like Google Cloud, we’re taking a big step forward in our mission to transform the travel experience with technology and machine learning,” said Odjo, Chief Technology Officer, iDreams. Carsten Bernhard said in a statement.

Google hasn’t shared news about other travel company partners involved with its AI technology. In travel, OpenAI has previously announced that it will be able to work with Expedia, Kayak and OpenTable pento on the ChatGPIT website to create plugins that help users complete travel bookings.

Skift recently released a research report on the impact of generative AI on travel.
