ST. george – Utah Tech University continues its 107-year tradition of whitewashing the “D” while looking at St. George as it wraps up this year’s D-Week festivities.
In the year It has been a tradition since it began in 1915 as a Founders Day celebration for Dixie Academy.
This year’s event was chaired by former Dixie State University student Connor Shakespeare. He said that he has participated in the event for more than 20 years; Whitening the “D” is one of our favorite traditions because it brings students, alumni, staff and faculty together.
The participants gathered at 8 am on the road below the “D” and walked together to join the timeless tradition.
Before the picture began, Shakespeare relayed the story of the event and everyone sang the Utah Tech University fight song.
After “D” received new paint, the team headed back down the hill to eat breakfast and look over their work.
According to the Utah Department of State History, the landmark is Locally Significant in Social History Area Criteria A.
“This is more of a sign for the whole city that is seen in advertising and promotional media for the community,” said the government website States. “This has become an annual community event to show school and civic pride.”
