Pharmacy Tech is a lifelong fisherman – a daily leader

BROOKHAVEN — “How are you,” called a friendly voice from the front yard on Alford Circle, where Dart landed Thursday afternoon. Kenosha Stewart relaxes in the warm spring air in a white top with floral pants.

She has called Brookhaven home for the past 20 years but has also lived in Canton and Michigan, where she was born. Lansing, Michigan was her home until she was 13 and then moved to Canton where she finished high school.

Her mother is originally from Brookhaven, she lived in Chicago and moved to Brookhaven when Stewart’s grandfather passed and Stewart followed. The two cities may be close but they are very different, she said.

“Canton is a fast-paced small town,” Stewart said. “Brookhaven is slow. It is a good place to raise a family and children. Brookhaven has an excellent school district.

After high school, she began working as a certified nursing assistant at Silver Cross Nursing Home at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Brookhaven. After seven years, she left her nursing home to become a pharmacy technician at Bains Pharmacy.

Banns is closing in 2021 after 67 years of service to the Brookhaven community. Stewart said she left after working there for 10 years and got a job at Walmart. Her job includes dispensing medication, talking to doctors about insurance and providing customer service.

“I enjoy it. I love the people,” Stewart said. “I’m a helper.” It helps me just to know that I’m helping someone. I like it very much. Helping people is what made me want to work in a nursing home.”

Outside of work, she attends church on the first and third Sundays at Crump Chapel in Brookhaven.

Her vacation is occupied by two things. She is trying new hobbies, fishing and gardening. Pots sit in her flower bed, along with a few azaleas and a rose bush she bought Thursday. She said she often buys fake flowers.

Fishing is her favorite hobby. She started when she was nine years old in Michigan with her grandmother. Her experience was great and her first fishing trip was “exciting.” Since she lives in Brookhaven, she often goes out and fishes in the local ponds or occasionally in Lincoln Lake.

“My grandmother was really into it and I loved working with her, fishing,” Stewart said. “I’m trying to catch everything I’ve got. I don’t have a favorite fish to catch. I am good at fishing. When you are good, you will be interested in him. If I go, I usually bring fish and usually take other people out. It’s a peaceful pastime where you can think a lot.”
