Vermont Agricultural Food and Markets Agency The Northeast Dairy Business Innovation Center (NE-DBIC) is working to build resilience and capacity in the region’s dairy supply chain. An important aspect of this work is to invest in the regional process. To this end, NE-DBIC has two dairy processing grants open now:
Current Dairy Expansion Grant
$12 million in funding to help expand the use of regionally produced milk at processing facilities in the Northeast, focused on volume expansion and acquisition of specialized equipment necessary to increase processing capacity on existing production lines. Open to dairy processors in the Northeast, there are three levels of funding to accommodate processors of all sizes.
Applications for this multi-level grant are available now, and the first round of applications will open on Thursday, March 16. Please consider joining the informative webinar on March 15th at 11am.
Milk processing research and development innovation grant
$1 million in funding is available for projects at various levels that support sustainability and innovation for dairy processors in the Northeast. Grants open to dairies and producer associations in the Northeast range from $75,000 to $250,000, with a 25% (cash or in-kind) matching commitment required.
This Dairy Processing Research and Development Innovation Grant closes Thursday, March 23 at 2:00 p.m.

Applications are open for CSA grants.
Applications are now open for the VAAFM Community Supported Agriculture Grant.
This grant supports local farms and promotes nutrition, food availability and cooking education for children and families.
Eligible applicants are Vermont registered or licensed early childhood care providers, after-school programs and 21st Century Child Learning Center programs.
The maximum grant award is $1,000 and pays for 70-80% of the CSA or farm share.

Produce safety improvement grants
Looking to implement product safety changes on your farm?
Vermont Agriculture, Food and Markets Product Safety Improvement Grants can be used to implement on-farm food safety practices that meet safety regulatory requirements or meet market needs.
Grants range from $5,000-$20,000 with no relevant fees. Applications open Monday, March 13!

Working Lands Highlight: Hillside Homestead
Chet and Renee Baker love dairy farming with every fiber of their being. However, the husband and wife team is still hanging on.
The farm is often paid less than the production price for conventional milk due to the national milk supply. The transition to raw milk production for Jasper Hill raw-milk cheese will soon change.
A grant from Working Lands is enabling the bakers to build a dry sawdust and hay storage shed. It is necessary to produce raw milk. The bakers will be one of the first in Vermont to transition from pasteurized-milk cheese to raw-milk cheese production.

41 million dollars Creation of wood products
The United States Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service announced that it will provide $41 million through the 2023 Wood Innovation Grant and 2023 Community Wood Grant programs.
The support should fuel innovation and create new markets for wood products and renewable wood energy.
The application deadline for both grant programs is Thursday, March 23 at 5 p.m.
Applications may be submitted by e-mail to the Forest Service Regional Timber Innovation Coordinator listed in the application instructions.
