clogs and nail clips. Chokers and metal. Once again, everything old is fashionably new again—this time, 1990s styles (a few extend into accents). And the return of some things – low-high pants and pencil-thin eyebrows – caused a lot of debate (many women are simply not willing to take it again), it is worth accepting many previous trends. We asked four stylists what they’re most excited to see back, and they all said the same thing: skinny pants. In the following pages, these pros show you how to update retro looks—along with other ’90s inspo.

The ’90s fashion revival has brought back four pants. Embrace nostalgia—but with these expert tips.

Kathryn Bushra of Rachel’s Personal Styling Company talks about cool, understated simplicity and excess in ’90s fashion. One of her favorite trends: the wide-leg pants worn by icons like Princess Diana and Julia Roberts – but this year they have more structure and shape.

How to wear them. Bushra says it’s important to up the ante — with a ’90s-inspired graphic tee or, as pictured, a pleated skirt. For a more updated style, add a belt with bold hardware. For a dressy look, pair wide-leg pants with a fitted shirt and colorful sling heels. For denim, dark and navy washes, Bushra says, will easily go with your existing wardrobe. Pair with a cropped sweater and tank with fun sneakers.

Attorney, fashion influencer and stylist Ty Barker says today’s mid-to-high-end flared denim is more distinct from the ultra-low-rise styles of the late ’90s and early aughts and Chanel than the ’70s vibe. – The version, according to Barker, is that we never should have messed up to begin with.

How to wear them. Barker suggested going full ’70s in a button-down shirt and platform. (Add an oversized cardigan or blazer.) For a more casual look: A white tee with a cropped leather jacket, metallic toe heels.

Cargo pants

Stylist Lindsay Evans remembers seeing celebrity cargo pants in the mid-’90s when the late singer Aaliyah wore them. In the year The trend continued in the early 2000s with celebrities like Mel B of the Spice Girls and Christina Aguilera rocking orange parachute cargo in the 1999 “Genie in a Bottle” video. While cargo pants were finally anti-chic, they’re back.

How to wear them. For a more “temporary” look, Evans suggests buying a color like pink or purple, which won’t have much effect. The other keys: a fitted top, an oversized layer and a heel. If you’re concerned about drawing unwanted attention to your hips, Evans suggests bulking up and driving with oversized pockets.

Stylist Naina Singla loves the understated feel of two ’90s-inspired trouser trends: straight-leg jeans and leather.

How to wear them. Straight-leg jeans—high-waisted and paired with a white tank or tee and blazer—are the “off-duty model” look first popularized by supermodels like Cindy Crawford. To update her outfit for 2023, Singla suggests skipping long layered necklaces in favor of “statement accessories” like white gold tennis choker necklaces and open or peep-toe heels. As for Singhala’s other favorite throwback fashion—leather pants—today’s versions are high-waisted and pant-like, unlike the leathers of the ’90s. These days, she likes them in black, or even brown or khaki, paired with a neutral colored sleeveless sweater top. After that, choose other pieces to complete the look: an over-the-shoulder sweater, gold earrings, and black ankle boots or a long belted trench, patent-leather loafers, and a gold studded necklace.
