Most modern smartphones come with powerful processors, capable of handling games with high-fidelity graphics. However, most of these smartphones also rely on a passive cooling solution, most likely in a liquid vapor chamber. So, even a gaming-oriented smartphone can get hot while in use.

This is because the phone has very limited space for cooling. When the phone heats up, the processor runs under the clock, affecting performance. OnePlus recently showcased its concept phone with a PC-like liquid cooler at MWC 2023. The company has unveiled a standalone liquid cooler that can be used on any smartphone.

The OnePlus 45W liquid cooler is attached to the smartphone and improves heat distribution. While smartphone external cooling is by no means a new technology, OnePlus’ implementation of the same is different from the rest. Unlike what we saw on the Asus ROG Phone 6 (review), attach a clip with a fan inside, the OnePlus 45W liquid cooling clip unit is very light at only 75 grams.

In addition, it does not blow hot air on the user’s hand. To make this product effective, OnePlus has added an option to select the desired cooling rate and reduce noise. This means that the OnePlus 45W liquid cooler can be quite noisy when used at high speeds.

The company claims that the OnePlus 45W liquid cooler can reduce the temperature of the phone by 20 degrees. Note that while it should run on any phone, it provides the best performance when sitting directly on the processor. Also, 45W is a lot of power, but a high-end gaming laptop CPU will have the same TDP, so it can use more electricity.

So far, this is only a concept, and there is no information on the same launch. Considering the technology that goes into making this cooler, it easily costs more than a mid-range smartphone in the market.
