Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery, Aka CI/CD, is a modern development concept where code is regularly updated and pushed to a central repository, rather than waiting for a set of features to be completed and releasing them all at once. It’s a fairly recent build, but Earth Technologies, a startup, believes it’s ripe for updating to make CI faster and more efficient.
The company has had an open source CI product for some time, but today it announced the release of Earthly CI, a SaaS version that users can subscribe to. It also announced a previously unannounced $6.5 million seed plus a closed seed in 2021. For some reason, the company was reluctant to reveal the exact closing date.
Earth founder and CEO Vlad A. Ianescu explained that traditional CI suffers from pokies, which slows down developers waiting for code to integrate. Moreover, he said, the software is difficult to run and debug on a local laptop. Finally, he believes that the price is expensive and the design is expensive because it is usually paid per minute of construction, a practice that prevents companies from building fast systems.
He says I started my company to solve these problems.
“Our CI innovates continuous integration by providing truly fast CI pipelines, I’m talking orders of magnitude faster than ever before. “We’re talking two to 20x speed improvements, which will unlock a level of productivity for the engineering team you’ve never seen before,” he says.
They do this by running only the modified version instead of running the entire setup each time. “So if you look at traditional CI, the typical workflow is for the developer to first commit code to GitHub and then wait for CI to start. And then there’s a lot of steps like reloading programming languages and then reloading. Rebuilding application dependencies and unchanged components.”
“And up to this point it’s been exactly the same every time. Our technology allows you to reuse that calculation from previous runs, so you’re just building what’s changed,” he said.
The open source project is free to download, but the paid version, Earthly CI says, lacks the speed boost.
The company has 15 employees, 4 of which are funded and are gradually hiring for selected roles. In particular, he is looking to build a team that goes to market.
Ionescu said it was a challenge to find a variety of technical experts while building the team, but said he would like to fill other roles with a variety of candidates. “It’s not easy, especially when you have a very DevOps-CI type of product. Statistically, there are very few candidates for those specific roles. It’s tough, but as we continue to build a team that includes a lot of juniors [roles] And that’s where we see a lot of diversity come in,” he said.
The $6.5 million round of funding was led by Innovation Endeavors from existing investors 468 Capital and Asymmetric Ventures.
