NEW YORK (AP) – Brandon Maxwell went back to basics and kicked off old revival trends while challenging silhouettes in his first fall/winter collection at New York Fashion Week.

Tuesday’s show was held on Valentine’s Day in the Industrial Building. Before the event, heart-shaped boxes of chocolates were placed on the benches, creating a romantic atmosphere.

Maxwell played with neutrals and ’90s silhouettes, really rooted in comfort and versatility, while also elevating classic trends like oversized blazers and coats and rugged loungewear.

The opening look is dressed in modern clothes – the model wears a structured blazer and a pair of baggy shorts that are cinched above the knee. The look was accented with silver cuff bracelets, long black socks and tight black mini heels.

Sticking to various shades of tan, black, burgundy, brown and white, Maxwell emphasized the tailoring of these effortless outfits for a classy yet 90s aesthetic.

“The color palette might suggest that it’s dark and the music too bombastic, but for me it gave me a deep joy,” Maxwell said in a backstage interview.

One of the best looks from the show was a two-piece cropped wool ensemble with a thin belt at the waist. Other looks ranged from a long, slouchy brown and white sweater, cozy to sleep, and a three-piece burgundy look that rocked the model.

Celebrities in attendance on Tuesday morning included Lea Michele, Natalia Bryant, Ella Emhoff, Bethan Hardison and Huma Abedin.

In the final walk, the models walked the runway together holding hands. But something else happened: A few of Maxwell’s laundromats also came out to applaud.

Maxwell said it’s important to acknowledge the team behind the clothing because some members have been part of the brand since the beginning and are proud of the work they’ve done together.

“I think New York fashion is not just about designers,” he says. Many people say that the people behind the scenes “are really the real stars of it.
