Granville, W.Va – Granville Mayor Patty Lewis is raising concerns about House Bill 2842 and is asking Monongalia County commissioners for help.
On a group trip to Charleston for Mon-Preston County Day, Lewis said she first heard about the proposal to eliminate municipal permits and fees.
“We’ve looked at the bill, and we can’t see any other language that would require a business to register so you know who’s doing business in your community,” Lewis said.
According to Lewis, towns and cities across the state are shrinking. Lewis said these small cuts add up to gaps in funding that could negatively impact residents.
“It’s another source of revenue; it’s not that big of a revenue stream, but it’s another reduction in the revenue stream for municipalities and cities,” Lewis said.
Lewis said he has concerns for all small towns, but sent a message to commissioners that municipalities need more funding to maintain services.
“If you continue to reduce revenue sources and start looking at smaller municipalities, it puts the burden on the county commissions,” Lewis added.
For residents, Lewis said, zero controls on people selling products or services to your city is a no-brainer. He also said that the business license is a check to ensure that the residents are not cheated or even harmed.
“Hopefully, the businesses should at least register and report,” Lewis said. I think that’s problematic if you don’t know who’s trading in your town.
