A new exhibition celebrating 50 years of hip-hop’s contribution to the world of fashion has opened at the FIT Museum in Manhattan.
It’s a curated collection of apparel and accessories that celebrates artists, music videos, red carpets and performance stages.
“Hip-hop style is fly, fit and fabulous and has been for 50 years,” said Elizabeth Way, assistant curator of costumes at the FIT Museum. “We want people to come to this exhibit and realize that something very focused in the Bronx started or how the hip-hop style worn by the artist is worn every day.”

“Fresh, Flay and Fabulous: Fifty Years of Hip-Hop Style” features beautiful jewelry, Timberland boots, cool sneakers, logo-covered clothing, tracksuits and more — all of which have been popular in the genre over the years.
“In the year Worn in the 1970’s, 80’s, 90’s, and even today, these pieces are a true representation of how people in the culture wear them. These really tell an important story. Some of these pieces are on display for the first time,” Wei said.
The exhibit features dozens of famous outfits worn by celebrities.
“This is a Roberto Cavalli piece. That’s what Lil Kim wore in 2003,” Way said, pointing to a denim floral embroidered jacket and skirt.
Beyoncé’s MCM bustier, vintage Mugler gown Cardi B wore to win her first Grammy and Chance the Rapper’s custom Ralph Lauren stadium tuxedo in 2021.
“When Chance the Rapper wore this, it was like a Cinderella moment for him because he loved growing up,” Way said.
In addition to all-American brands such as Ralph Lauren and European design houses such as Gucci and Versace, the exhibition pays attention to lesser-known but major designers of hip-hop fashion.
“I think Dapper Dan is one of the most important designers of the late 20th century, but we also have people like April Walker who are very early streetwear designers and one of the only women working in that space,” Wei said.
Wei says that sampling of the items in the room paved the way for countless creators, and showed the world that hip-hop can’t be kept in a box.
“Hip-hop fashion is not just one thing, it’s multi-faceted and has changed a lot over the last fifty years. Hip-hop fashion is American fashion,” Wei said.
The exhibition, which features more than 150 items, runs until April 23 and entry is free.
The museum is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 12pm to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
