COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech scored six points and led the entire contest as it fell to SIUE 89-62 on Thursday afternoon at the Hooper Elben Center. The Golden Eagles scored 56 of 89 points in the paint and shot 54 percent (17-57) in their three-game sweep of the Cougars.
SIUE falls to 6-14 overall and 5-4 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Tennessee Tech improves to 13-6 and 7-2.
“Tennis Tech hit the ball really well and made it difficult for us throughout the game,” said the head coach. Samantha Quigley Smith he said. “We need to have a little more heart on defense. We need to value our defensive efforts.”
At the end of the first half, the Cougars trailed by 10 points and three forwards committed two or more fouls. Tennessee Tech took advantage of the Cougars’ offense, shooting 9-11 from the free throw line. SIUE shot 31 percent (11-35) in the opening half compared to the Golden Eagles’ 48.
The Golden Eagles had an opening six-point lead in the second half before SIUE had its best run of the season, reeling off eight straight points. However, Tennessee Tech shot 53 percent in the third quarter and outscored the Cougars 20-12.
Tennessee Tech kept their foot on the gas and outscored SIUE 31-22 in the final quarter to win the contest by 27 points. The Cougars shot just 12 percent (1-8) in the fourth, but went 20 of 23 from the free throw line.
The Golden Eagles scored 25 points on fast break opportunities in a 44-32 win over the Cougars. Tennessee Tech dished out 29 assists, a season-high tied with SIUE.
The Cougars’ scoring effort was driven. Ajulu Taha 20 points. She shot 5-8 from the floor and 10-11 from the free throw line. Taha recorded her fifth 20-point game of the season. She also led the Cougars with seven rebounds.
KK Rodriguez He added five goals and finished the game with 12 points. She was 5-13 from the field and 1-2 at the line. Sophie Lewis He added 11 points while going 4-4 at the line.
Tennessee Tech had four points in double-figures, led by Anna Walker’s 16. Jada Ginn had 15.
