It was the muskie spawn that caught my eye Thursday on the opening day of the Chicagoland Fishing, Travel & Outdoors Expo. The show runs till Sunday.
When I looked closer, the reproduction of the Nolan Sprengers Minnesota record muskie, captured November 22, 2021 from Mille Lacs. His record was 55 pounds, 14 ounces. The reproduction includes bait fish caught on a 15-inch paddle tail.
Then I looked at the man behind the muskie in the booth and realized it was Sprengeler. It was his Avid Fishing Adventures booth (708). He has been promoting his guiding services in Green Bay and Minnesota as he plans to lead full-time this year.
Other display notes:
- I was drawn to e-bikes, so I had to stop by the Pedago booth (to the left of the wall as you enter the Haug pool). They are being sold in franchises in various suburbs around Chicago. An e-bike will be my next major outdoor purchase for personal, fishing and hunting. On a practical level, in terms of solid advice, I’m more than happy to quit. More another day.
- Jim Grant It was celebrating 40 years (around) in business with a 40th anniversary rod, which was $150 off at the event. Grant Industries, Inc. Located at Booth 230.
- I had to stop Mike Mladenik Outside (418) and ask Mladnik how long he’s been writing and directing his work. He said he is 45 years old at the age of 68. He says he has no plans to retire and will continue until he is physically unable to.
- Good to see the captain. Ralph Steiger Charters Booth (424) with Staiger again for booking trips from spring. A good opportunity to exchange some tall tales as well.
- Good to see such a national figure. Ish Monroe Making the Daiwa booth (337).
- It is also good to meet and chat. Louis Monetti By Biz Bytes Booth (638). I picked up a few tips in Knoxville, Tennessee in case I hit the Bassmaster Classic in March. In less than an hour, I plan to sit in on Monetti’s first seminar at the fish tank, since I did a column on him yesterday.
- and Basore He pulled over to his historic fishing display and showed me around. Larry Ramsell Book, “Mostly Antique Muskellunge (and Related) Postcards.” I loved it and forgot to tell Basore that half of my unfinished Masters course was on postcards. He also gave me a suggestion for an upcoming event.
- And yes, the beloved Buffalo Valley Spice and Peter Pepper Pils Booth (17) is back.
- After all, it’s nice to see people you or I know by name, and sometimes by other names. Arden, Lip, Chauncey, Ryan, JP, Larry, Jim, Johnny, Quags, Violet. And all the boys of the club. Connecting Quags and his son is even better. Mike With Larry on fishing electronics.
- But most of all, for the first time in the last three years, it is just to return to the big fishing show.
