Tell us a little about yourself and what you do at GoDaddy?

I am a senior software engineer in the DRI team and work on Domain Control Center products. I have been with Godadi for over seven years. I started at Godadi in 2015 after my Masters in CS. The past seven years have been amazing – I’ve grown into myself! I started calling the US home (after moving from India in 2012), became a mother to two young daughters, and had the opportunity to work on various projects here. I have been involved with GDGrad since the beginning. This is an employee resource group dedicated to building a community of recent graduates. As a mentor to these individuals, I help them on board and feel comfortable in a corporate environment. In the year In 2016 and 2017, I was fortunate enough to travel to Stanford and the University of Pittsburgh as part of the recruiting process. This was a very satisfying experience.

How does GoDaddy make you feel about being supported as a woman?

I have been the only woman in my group for a long time. Even though you’d think I’d have problems, I’ve never felt treated differently, which is amazing. GoDaddy is generous with maternity leave, giving me time to spend with my kids. GDWIT, a women’s workforce resource, has been a support system during the many uncertain times with the pandemic.

What’s one thing you’ve learned about yourself recently at work?

I have always been an IC since I joined GoDaddy. This role is mandatory until you reach level three. After this step, you can choose between an IC or a leadership role. However, I had the opportunity to lead a few major projects. This includes a TransferIn rewrite and new DOP products! Through this experience, I interacted with product and program managers and interacted with key stakeholders critical to project completion. In the process I learned that I am really good at coaching young people, communicating and solving issues for different stakeholders. The “Joining Forces” award was given to both projects. Because of these opportunities, I have decided to move into Engineering Manager this year.

What are you actively trying to learn at work?

I had to learn not to be perfect. We often think (especially as women) that a “perfect” job is always better than a “good” job, but often the opposite is true. The time it takes to complete one project means that other work gets pushed aside. Good work doesn’t always have to be flawless.

What is your personal advice to women interested in your career?

Be curious and confident. In the technology industry, you must always be learning. Since joining GoDaddy, I have been able to learn many new languages and technologies. It is important to always work on your technology while understanding your needs. When I started I was a front-end engineer and it didn’t suit my needs. So I moved to Backend and absolutely love it. Be sure to share your thoughts! Be sure to talk to your manager about which path you want to take in your career. I wish I had learned this sooner!

What ideas can you bring to the GDWIT team?

I’ve been a site leader for the Iowa area for a long time and I’ve seen women and partners really enjoy finding common interests among the group. With remote work, it’s hard to find things in common with your co-workers. I want to create that space in a virtual setting as well. It would be nice to have subgroups in GDWIT where members can chat and discuss topics of interest. Examples might include: recipes for healthy eating, travel tips, and so on. We can also try to organize events that address these needs.
