The Chicago Bears traded their linebacker after trading Roquan Smith to the Baltimore Ravens for second and fifth round picks in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The Bears have a big need at linebacker with free agent acquisitions Nicholas Morrow and Matt Adams set to hit free agency. Right now, undrafted rookies Jack Sanborn, who shined at shortstop, and Sterling Weatherford are the only linebackers under contract in 2023.
Naturally, linebacker will be the focal point this offseason, with general manager Ryan Pauls able to find another difference-maker in the NFL draft. And Chicago is doing its homework.
According to Draft Network’s Ryan Fowler, the Bears met with Virginia Tech linebacker Dax Holifield this week in the Tropical Bowl, where the five-year contributor was a household name.
Per Fowler, Holyfield met with the Steelers, Dolphins and Jaguars.
The 6-foot-1, 245-pound Holyfield was a key contributor during his five seasons at Virginia Tech. He ranks fourth in program history with 349 total tackles.
In his senior season, Holyfield led the Hokies with 82 tackles, including 6.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble in 11 starts.
Holyfield is a name to pursue in the later rounds or as an undrafted free agent.
