As bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam climbed the charts, fashionistas of the day co-opted their outfits, bringing layered flannel shirts, chunky boots and baggy jeans into the mainstream.

The most famous appearance in the world of fashion was not long ago – in 2010 In early 1992, Marc Jacobs styled Kate Moss and Winona Ryder’s messy hair and applied eyeshadow for Perry Ellis’ 1993 runway collection.

Now, decades later, Gen Z is bringing it all back.

“There’s such an emphasis on thrift these days — they’re more careful about fashion and sustainability,” Liz Teich, a New York stylist, told the Post, adding that the high-end label on new clothing is playing a big part in the comeback.

“Because of that, they’re finding things that they wore in the grunge era, and I think they’re gravitating towards that because it looks effortless and they can throw it together and make it their own,” she said.

Teich says that since Gen X, who created the look, each generation has embraced grunge in its own way and “rediscovered it.”

“[To each generation] It’s fun and new for them,” Teich said. “New musicians like Billie Eilish [are] Showing their anger – I think it’s something that comes up again and again.

Teich added that grunge’s rise in popularity may be a reaction to the “pure girl aesthetic” that has dominated fashion and social media in the past few years.

“Everyone started to look like each other,” she said. “Gen Z is probably eager to create their own aesthetic.”
