All US and Alaska Elites are now eligible for reverse supplement upgrades.

Alaska Airlines is making a big change to first class upgrades by shortening the upgrade window for MVP and MVP Gold members. In addition, all American Airlines AAdvantage Elite members qualify for first-class upgrades on Alaska-operated flights, while all Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan Elite members qualify for first-class upgrades on most American Airlines-operated flights.

Over the weekend, Alaska discreetly posted these updates on its website. Let’s unpack all the changes you need to know.

American AAdvantage top upgrades on Alaska

American Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum members are eligible for upgrades to first class on Alaska Airlines for one year. Now, all AAdvantage elite members are eligible for first class upgrades on Alaska Airlines.

First class

Here’s what you can expect for priority upgrades on an Alaska Airlines flight:

• Alaska MVP Gold 100K
• Alaska MVP Gold 75K
• American AAdvantage Assistant Key, Executive Platinum and Platinum Pro members.
• Alaska MVP Gold.
• American AAdvantage Platinum.
• Alaska MVP. All US and Alaska Masters are now eligible for reverse upgrades.
• American AAdvantage Gold members.

Premium class

Alaska also has extra legroom in the economy cabin, which it markets as a premium class. In addition to 4 inches of extra legroom, Premium-class passengers enjoy priority boarding and free beer, wine and cocktails on flights over 350 miles. Here’s the Premium-class policy for AAdvantage Elite members:

• Executive Platinum and Platinum ProAll prices except economy fares after ticket purchase.

Alaska Mileage Plan Peak Updates on America

Alaska MVP Gold 75K and MVP Gold 100K members currently have first class waitlist priority on select American Airlines flights. That’s how our news managing editor, Clint Henderson, found American Airlines upgrades like Alaska MVP Gold 100K a hit.

First class

Now, all Mileage Plan Elite members are eligible for upgrades on American Airlines within the US (including Hawaii) and between the US and Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Bermuda and Central America. The Mileage Plan elite upgrade ranges are similar to what AAdvantage elite members enjoy when traveling on American. These upgrades are single-cabin upgrades only.

While there’s a lot behind American’s upgrade queues, here’s what you can expect to get priority upgrades on an American Airlines flight at a basic level:

• American AAdvantage Assistant Key.
• American AAdvantage Executive Platinum.
• American AAdvantage Platinum Pro.
• Alaska MVP Gold 100K and MVP Gold 75K.
• American AAdvantage Platinum.
• Alaska MVP Gold.
• American AAdvantage Gold.

Main cabin extra

Like Alaska, American offers extra-legroom on its planes that is sold as an add-on to the main cabin. To select a main cabin extra seat, go to aa.com with the American Airlines Record Checker.

MVP and MVP Gold update window changes

According to the website, later this year, Alaska will begin clearing MVP and MVP Gold upgrades between 24 and 48 hours before departure. Currently, MVP members have upgrade benefits within 48 hours of launch, while MVP Gold members can clear upgrades within 72 hours of launch.

Alaska will bring lower and mid-level elite upgrades in line with American Airlines, lowering each of these windows by 24 hours.

Alaska has announced some fairly significant changes to its reforms. Alaska prioritizes certain American Elite members over its own MVP Elite members, and American prioritizes certain Alaska Elite members over its AAdvantage elite members.

If I had been MVP with Alaska, I wouldn’t have celebrated. Best of all, American Concierge Key, Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro and Platinum members are now higher on the upgrade list than Alaska MVP members, and MVP upgrades now clear within 24 hours, as opposed to 48 hours before. That means MVP members spend less time in the first class.

And while the upgrade benefits on American Airlines look great, MVP members are the last elite members to receive upgrades on American.
