Houghton, Mich – No. 13 Michigan Tech In 2023, St. Thomas remained undefeated at McInnes Student Ice Arena with a 2-0 shutout on Friday. Blake Pietyla extended his school record with his fifth shutout of the season after posting 27 saves in his 15th career shutout.

“St. Thomas played hard, blocked shots and created scoring opportunities,” Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. If we didn’t have a good goalkeeper, it would have been a very different game.

Tech improved to 15-6-3 overall and 8-4-3 in the CCHA in coach Shawhan’s 110th career win.

Named to the Mike Richter Award Watch List this week for the third straight season, Pattila, the CCHA Goaltender of the Week, stopped 10 shots in the first season, 11 in the second and 6 in the third. His .926 save percentage is the highest among goaltenders in 20 games this season.

Blake made a big right-handed save with 4:45 left in the first to stonewall the Tommies with a big chance in the final seconds of the second.

Parker Saretsky finally broke the ice with the game-winning goal 8:49 into the third. Jake Crespi sprinted up the ice and found Saretsky at the blue line. He beat the defense for a fast breakaway and scored his fifth of the season and 12th of the season. Evan Orr also helped.

“There was a lot of ice with the 4-on-4,” Saretsky said. “I tried to get some speed around the net and the D guy had a gap. Crespi set up the puck for me and I took it to the net.”

Tech whistled for a penalty kick with 6:06 left in the third. Blake Pietila made three big shots and got a block from defenseman Brett Thorne.

St. Thomas (5-15-1, 4-10-1 CCHA) pulled the goalie with 2:47 remaining. Tristan Ashbrook made it 2-0 with an empty netter 20 seconds later. In the game, he bounced back and scored his sixth of the season and 33rd of his career for the second consecutive game. Cash Rasmussen assisted on the game.

“I knew it was going to be a tough game,” added Shawhan. “I know the guys are tired after our long trip and the first week of class. Our guys continued to find a way, and the third period was our best.”

The Huskies led 38-27 in shots. Aaron Trotter stopped 36 shots for the visitors.

The teams will meet for the fourth time this season on Saturday in Junior Hockey Night. Youth can enter the game for $5 by purchasing an adult ticket. Post-game success is also with the Huskies.

Saretsky added: “We have to withstand their pressure in the game tomorrow.” “If we stick to our game plan and stick to the gaps in the D-zone and the neutral zone, I think we can do well again.”

The pack drops at 6:07 p.m
