MITCHELL – A student-built motorcycle made a pit stop Friday for a public unveiling on the campus of Mitchell Technical College before hitting the road for a high-profile Las Vegas auction.
Working with Horsepower and the city of Sturgis, second-year Powersports Technology students customized the 2018 Harley-Davidson Road Glide into a “playable, competitive bag with an aesthetic touch,” said Chris Degan, director of Mitchell Tech. program.
The finished bike features the Sturgis city logo and the number 83, commemorating the 83rd year of the rally, with ’80s-style racing lines.
It will be sold at Mecum Auctions in Las Vegas from January 24-28.
Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen said the proceeds will be used to “perpetuate the charitable work of the Sturgis Raleigh Endowment Fund, part of the Black Hills Community Foundation, for the benefit of future area residents.”
A portion of the proceeds will go to Helping with Horsepower, a Mitchell-area nonprofit organization dedicated to the purpose, safety and welfare of individuals born with or diagnosed with disabilities. The organization’s bike rebuild program is a therapeutic opportunity for participants to rebuild a motorcycle while getting the tools to rebuild their lives.
“It’s a win-win,” says Laura Cloke, creator of the Horsepower Bike Rehab Program. “The students get project experience, which is supported by additional training from some of the sponsors … from the proceeds of helping (with the Horsepower and Rally Endowment). Mitchell’s unveiling took place on Friday, January 13 at the Nordby Trades Center on the Mitchell Tech campus.
Following the unveiling, the bike will be taken to Sturgis, where the city will host its own display on Jan. 17 at 4 p.m., before being sent on its way to Las Vegas for auction.
