Bone-conduction headphones, TV streaming devices and Bluetooth speakers are among the tech gadgets that are popping up on holiday wish lists this year. Other flagships — ahem, the new 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max — are pretty close to getting it.
But as the year draws to a close, the CNN staff is reflecting on the most important tools, services and apps we’ll support in 2022. – Not only the most wanted products.
It was a busy and tumultuous time, filled with news of international conflicts, rising inflation, a possible recession, and a potential pandemic. Here are the products our anchors, reporters, editors and reporters rely on the most to get through the year and also find Some comfort.
In the year From covering the White House in 2022 until waking up at 3 a.m. when I went to anchor CNN’s new morning show, my sleep schedule was reversed. One of my favorite devices this year is my Oura Ring (starts at $299). But I wonder who monitors my sleep. [it] They were very upset that I went from 7-8 hours a night to an average of 5 hours a night. Seeing how my vital signs and sleep patterns have improved has encouraged me to move around more or go to bed earlier without that extra wine. – Kaitlan Collins, co-host of “CNN This Morning.”
BeReal — a photo-sharing app that prompts users once a day at different times to share whatever they’re doing in a two-minute window — is a fun break from the filters and motivational videos on other platforms. My favorite tech job of the year is the one I don’t own yet. I spend a lot of time on airplanes for work and I think it would be nice to have airplane TVs paired with your AirPods. Now that I’m driving home at 1 a.m., I rely heavily on my HBO Max app (starts at $9.99 a month). As a huge absorption risk to our parent company, “White Lotus” is great company at night when few other people are awake. Those characters stuck with me and I was sad when the season ended. Between work and shuttling various kids to basketball, guitar and taekwondo practice, finding time to make dinner is a constant struggle. Whisk allows me to look in my fridge, type in what ingredients I have, select a maximum 30-minute recipe, and it spits out dozens of recipes I can quickly make. It also allows me to save my favorite recipes – whether I’ve found them in Whiskey or around the web. Whisk pulls out the ingredients list, lets you create a shopping list, and easily adjusts the recipe if you want to make more or less. It’s easily my most used app every week. I want to say that I spent $70 on a digital camera for my toddler because I believe in encouraging her hobbies and nurturing her creative expression. But mostly I bought it because I was tired of her stealing my phone and filling it with dozens of pictures of pillows and legs. (Whoever invented burst mode on the iPhone would like to have a word with you.) Yes, Kidamento cameras are beautiful and thoughtfully designed for young hands and minds. Stories can come anytime or I may need to report while I’m at home or away. A good microphone is important, but they can be bulky and come with different cables and adapters. I started using these small wireless road mics ($299) for social videos on my phone and found the quality to be just as good as my big mic. I used to read books on the iPad with the Kindle app, but recently switched back to a standalone e-reader. Amazon’s new Kindle Paperwhite ($139) holds thousands of books and has a long-lasting battery, an adjustable backlit display, and is as lightweight as ever. (You can also use the free Libby app to download e-books from your local library.) It’s reminiscent of the beauty and simplicity of single-use digital devices free of the distractions of the Internet. I remember being an intern ten years ago, entering half-hour long interviews for editors. It was tedious and took twice the duration of the interview to record every word. Today, as a reporter, I recorded my own interview, but on record. Rev.com — an automated transcription service that allows you to record interviews on the spot or upload interview audio — spits out a transcript in minutes. I see and hear what the subject is saying and go back to different points in the interview as I craft my story.
