The City of Dallas partnered with the City-Business Climate Alliance to form a Business Climate Leadership Group, with its first meeting last month.
“We are honored to be one of CBCA’s Cohort Cities,” Mayor Eric Johnson said in a statement. “These strategic partnerships will be critical to increasing the impact of our business community’s climate efforts and overall environmental and climate action plans. This alliance will help establish Dallas and its businesses as national leaders in implementing data-driven climate solutions to promote a vibrant, healthy and resilient city.
Setting climate targets in line with the Paris Agreement
The CBCA was established by C40 Cities, CDP and the World Business Council as a joint initiative for sustainable development and aims to accelerate climate action through local urban and business cooperation. CBCA provides a forum for city and business leaders to develop joint commitments, work together and implement projects that help cities deliver their climate action plans and businesses meet their climate targets under the Paris Agreement.
The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group is a group of 97 cities worldwide, representing one-twelfth of the world’s population and one-quarter of the world’s economy.
The Business Climate Leadership Group was created in response to Dallas being selected as one of eight global partner cities to participate in a three-year program with the CBCA.
The city was selected based on its Comprehensive Environmental and Climate Action Plan (CCAP), the level of engagement with the local business community and the need for peer-to-peer exchanges. .
The Dallas City Council approved the partnership in 2020
Johnson signed a letter of intent for the city’s participation in June 2020, and the City Council approved the partnership in December 2020.
The city partnered with the CBCA to identify and recruit a variety of local business leaders, including representatives from AIA Dallas, Smart Energy 360, CBRE, Toyota North America, and the Office of Environmental Quality and Sustainability. Oncor, Dallas Innovation Alliance, Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce, Salesforce and Dallas Regional Council.
CDP’s business survey was used to identify key climate leaders in Dallas.
Members help implement a comprehensive environmental and climate action plan while supporting their own sustainability goals and sharing experiences and best practices.
Focus on buildings, energy, transportation and zero waste
The city says the group supports four of the eight CCAP goals: buildings, energy, transportation and zero waste, with initiatives focused on energy efficiency/net zero, electric vehicle infrastructure and solar power.
“CBRE is committed to building a sustainable and just future, from our Dallas headquarters to every community where we live and work. We look forward to partnering with CBCA to drive change and share insights on the execution of our own net zero carbon emissions strategy,” CBRE chief executive Tim Desmond said in a statement.
The leadership team is seeking participation from other organizations interested in contributing to small working groups focused on topics such as electric vehicles, solar, and energy efficiency.
