“Sustainable fashion can be boring, beautiful and timeless” – Lexi Silverstein

Impersonating Mother Nature herself, explosions of color are brought to life by multimedia influencer Lexi Silverstein, who wears designs by Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) student Andres Guerra at Sustainability. Silverstein attended the world’s largest fashion event to showcase emerging designers and brands investing in sustainability. Silverstein spent much of her lens time with Gera’s creations, which were sourced from materials that would otherwise have ended up in the trash.
“My favorite design from my capsule collection, ‘Las Chamas’, is a multicolored collection made from scraps from my other creations,” boasts Andres Guerra. “What better place than NYFW to show that sustainability can and should be a core value in fashion?”
A passionate and creative advocate of sustainable fashion, Silverstein collaborated with Guerra on his designs, showing how every scrap, shred and thread can be used and recycled to create memorable fashion statements. The outfits she wore during NYFW include:
- 7 yards of heavy duty 100% cotton denim from Michael Levine, fashioned into a circle skirt, striking sleeves with flat welt stitching, raw frayed edges and attached hood.
- 7 yards of orange tulle and 7 yards of purple polyester gabardine, both from Michael Levine, were made into a multi-layered dress – one layer was horsehair. Gabbadin was hand-stitched in a sheer purple dress that floated over a loose tulle leg wrap.
- Multicolored recycled polyester gabardine hand-torn fabric is stitched onto a sky-blue base fabric and topped with hot-lava colored leaves on bright green leaves.
“Sustainable fashion can be fierce, beautiful and limitless,” Silverstein said. “There is no excuse for being wasted. Young designers like Andres and others are showing that innovation and sustainability go hand in hand.

About Andres Guerrera
Guerra (Instagram: @_andreswar_) is a first-generation Venezuelan-American who sees fashion as a way to express individuality in the avant-garde world of art. Known as “Las Chamas”, the capsule collection is a tribute to the culture. He plays with layers, raw edges and dramatic imagery. “I started fashion two years ago,” he says. “I realized that fashion is the way I have to grow as an artist. There have been many trials and errors, not only in my samples, but also in life. But nothing has stopped my constant interest in every stitch you see in every design I make. I will continue to forge my own path in this journey. .
