There is no denying that the Covid-19 pandemic has changed our lives and the way we travel. From business and pleasure trips to long and lasting holidays, the hospitality sector must adapt to the new needs and demands of guests.
TD sat down with Trent Fraser, CEO of Choice Hotels about emerging travel trends and the post-pandemic hospitality sector.
Travel Daily (TD): How are Choice Hotels coping post-pandemic? What are the challenges you face?
Trent Fraser (TF): The post-pandemic era has some interesting and surprising trends in the way people travel.
Supporting franchisees with rolling stock and border locks has been our priority. During the lockdown and the pandemic, we have waived certain payments to franchisees and reduced the charging mechanism to help hotels with cash flow.
When our customers are ready and able to travel again, focus has been placed on retaining our head office team to ensure we can support our assets and maintain service levels.
So far, the recovery in our regional assets has been very strong. Until recently, extremely challenging requirements for international travel have given domestic travel to our regions a real boost, and it is exciting to see the growth in demand across regions. As these travel restrictions ease and international travel returns, we are seeing strong growth in our metro hotels, with future bookings looking very promising in the coming months.
Right now, our focus is on helping our franchisees accelerate their return to, and in many cases exceed, their 2019 numbers. We’ve invested in additional enterprise sales team members, built our revenue management program, and made multi-million dollar investments in loyalty, digital and traditional marketing channels over the past two years.
