EXETER TWP., Pa. – Forget the catwalk – a few days ago at New York Fashion Week it was all about Penny the dog walk.
“It was a proud moment for me,” said Penny’s wife Preeti Kaur.
Exeter Township native Kaur is talking about Maltipoo Penny as she walks the runway for designer Anthony Rubio.
“There were photographers taking pictures of her back, and eventually I gave her to the model she was assigned to and the model carried her down the runway,” she says.
Kaur says the pinch-me moment started as a pipe dream. She saw a casting call for dog couture models earlier this year and sent Penny a photo and resume.
“I was like, ‘It doesn’t hurt to give it a shot, you never know,'” Kaur said. “I mean, I’m from Berks County. It’s a long shot, but let’s try.”
Penny found the calling and the job.
“I literally jumped up and down,” Kaur said. “At first I didn’t think it was true, but I was very excited.”
So, they moved to New York City and Penny modeled for Rubio’s show in February. Fast forward seven months and she accepted her call. On September 11, Penny hit the runway for her second Rubio fashion show.
“Surreal,” Kaur said. “I can’t believe we’ve gone from a small town to the Big Apple.”
Penny helps out around the area while figuring out her hair fashion. She is a certified therapy dog and volunteers at the Children’s Alliance Center of Berks County.
“I want her to be very involved in our community,” Kaur said.
But the owner of the dog said that Penny’s modeling career started at the age of 1.
“We definitely want to continue with New York Fashion Week,” Kaur said. “They actually have LA Fashion Week, too.”
More information and photos of the four-legged star are available on her Instagram account.
