ST. george – A former employee of an auto parts store on Bluff Street was arrested after breaking into the business and stealing thousands of dollars worth of equipment along with a rental car from a neighboring agency.
Shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday, police responded to an auto parts store on Bluff Street after receiving a report of a business burglary.
Upon arrival, they learned that more than $4,500 in equipment had been taken from the business, including equipment belonging to two of the store’s employees, according to documents supporting the arrest. A laptop computer was also reported missing from the business.
While searching the scene for evidence, detectives learned that several keys had been taken from a car rental agency next door. The discovery was made by the employee when they arrived early in the morning to find several sets of keys locked inside their safe, the report said. And in addition to the keys, one of the rental vehicles was also missing, which police said after reviewing rental records listed the vehicle’s location and should have been placed on the lot.
In the course of the investigation, the authorities may suspect 36-year-old Morgan Shiloh Taylor, who was terminated last month and left the company under “bad circumstances.” Report it.
Police said Taylor was terminated for “stealing from the company and using drugs while on the job” and that he refused to return the keys after being terminated from the company.
Investigators said they suspect Taylor may have entered the house using a key that was left unreturned, with no signs of forced entry. The video surveillance recording system was found to be disconnected, contributing to other evidence suggesting the suspect had inside information prior to the break-in, the report said.
Also, a short video clip taken before the system went off shows a man wearing a baseball cap walking into the store and heading to the control panel, officers said, and seconds later the food was cut off.
Investigators also learned that Taylor, as a former employee, was privy to information about the car rental business, which was located near the store, including knowledge of where the rental vehicle keys were kept.
Meanwhile, authorities have collected GPS location data for the missing rental car, a Nissan Altima, found less than three blocks away from the lot where it was taken. Officers found the Nissan abandoned. Inside, they found several sets of keys identical to those taken from the rental office.
After learning Taylor was on probation, investigators turned to Adult Probation and Parole for help. An agent accompanied officers to a job site on 100 South St. George where he found Taylor working. He was then arrested and taken into custody facing multiple charges, including one count each of second-degree felony burglary and third-degree felony burglary.
When the case was reviewed by the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office, the state filed three additional charges against the suspect, one count each of third-degree aggravated burglary and theft and one count of theft, bringing the total to five charges. presented on the subject.
Taylor was found to have an extensive criminal history spanning more than a decade and includes charges and misdemeanors in Salt Lake City and Fillmore and Washington counties for theft, drug and weapons offenses.
After his arrest Wednesday, the suspect remains in custody without bail.
