Nicole Richie returns to the Prime Video fashion competition show for its third season this summer, joining fashion designer Jeremy Scott and executive producers Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn to find the industry’s next big fashion designer.
“For me as a judge, it’s important to just look at something to see if it’s my personal beauty or not. That’s not what I’m here for,” Richie said of judging this season. “We’re trying to find the next global brand, so there’s a lot at play for that.” That’s right, can you sew? Are you taking notes from every mentor that comes your way? Have you found a way to create an accessible look that blends with your high-end look?
Swiss fashion designer Yannick Zamboni has made it to the season three finals of “Making Rod” as the winner of Amazon Fashion’s $1 million prize and a mentorship award. Zamboni was the first non-American designer to win the competition.
The designer was up against British designer Georgia Harding and Brazilian designer Rafael Chauche for the coveted award. The designers’ final task was to design a concept store for their brand and create a 10-piece fashion collection, with four accessible looks and two menswear. They were also tasked with presenting their business plan and store concept to Christine Beauchamp, senior vice president of stores for North America, who heads Amazon Fashion.
Zamboni wowed the judges with a singular and avant-garde collection that showcased the style of traditional fashion pieces such as trousers, blouses and umbrellas that were transformed into different types of clothing.
This is Richie’s second season judging “Cutting Down,” after joining the judging panel for the show’s first season. She explained that this season felt different from the first — which was filmed at the beginning of the pandemic — because the designers were able to settle in Los Angeles and work out of a long-term studio.
“As a judge, I don’t know if there are too many challenges,” Ritchie said of the season. “I think we have to look at everything and try to get to know the designers and really understand where they’re coming from and what their eye is. Sometimes, when they show their current designs, we have to spend some time with them and talk to them to really understand where they’re coming from.”
This season included several topical issues such as one creating holiday-inspired outfits and another creating TikTok to showcase the vision behind designers’ creations.
Richie said her favorite week was the Tik Tok challenge because the platform was not something she was familiar with.
“I found it really interesting and funny because there were some videos that I really didn’t get anything from,” she said. “I think [musicians] Khloe and Halle were our guest judges that week, obviously, they’re young and this is probably their world. It was really interesting to see that there were things that I would never have come across and people who were like, ‘Oh, that video is amazing.’ I find those moments very eye-opening because you get a different perspective on what people are interested in.
While the fourth season of “Making the Cut” has yet to be announced, Richie said she’s excited to see what the challenges are and how a new set of designers tackles them.
In the near future, Richie continues to grow her House of Hallow fashion brand, working with Revolve for the retailer’s New York Fashion Week event, and has a few other projects planned this year.
