Ankara has issued a travel warning for Iraq as it escalates.

Ankara has asked Turkish nationals to avoid traveling to Baghdad because of rising unrest in Iraq that has claimed dozens of lives in the past few days.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued the warning to Turkish citizens late on August 29, stressing that the security situation in the Iraqi capital has deteriorated significantly.

The ministry warned Turkish citizens already in Baghdad to be vigilant and stay away from districts where the opposition is active.

In a separate statement, Ankara expressed concern over the unrest in the neighboring southern country.

“The changes taking place in Baghdad have taken a dangerous turn in terms of the country’s stability, unity and security. The stability and security of our friendly and brotherly Iraq is of vital importance to Turkey. Therefore, we are concerned about the insurgency that is spreading throughout the country,” the statement said.

“In this context, we invite all parties to take control and act sensibly,” he explained. We wish the current political disputes to be resolved through peaceful means and inclusive dialogue to ensure the peace and security of the Iraqi people.
