Grant Wells has been named Virginia Tech’s starting quarterback for the 2022 season opener against Old Dominion on Sept. 2, Hokies coach Brent Pree said. announced Wednesday. Wells was led by redshirt junior transfers from Marshall, South Carolina transfers Jason Brown and Connor Blumrick.
Wells finished 64.4% for 5,626 yards and 34 touchdowns for the Thundering Herd with a 14-9 record over two seasons, ranking among the most efficient transfers in college football. In the year In 2020, he became the first freshman to earn first-team All-Conference USA honors.
The West Virginia native has at least two years of eligibility remaining, not counting the suspension imposed by the NCAA after the season with Covid-19. More importantly, Wells will be hoping to quietly bring some consistency to what has been one of the most inconsistent quarterbacking situations in the country in the past half-decade.
Wells will be the sixth different Opening Day starter for Virginia Tech in the past eight seasons. Since Justin Fuente took over the program in 2016, only one quarterback has led the Hokies in passing yards, Hendon Hooker. Hooker transferred to Tennessee in 2021 despite having years of eligibility remaining.
Pry, who is in his first season after leaving the co-defensive coordinator position at Penn State, has brought in several different coaches to handle the administrative aspects of the offense. Tyler Bowen joins as offensive coordinator after stints at Penn State and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Brad Glenn comes to Blacksburg as the quarterbacks coach and playmaking coordinator after spending most of his career at Appalachian State. Pry also brought in assistant head coach Stu Holt of the offense after three years as the special teams coordinator at Louisville.
The mental high hopes to improve the offense behind quarterback Braxton Burmester, who transferred to San Diego State after posting a nationally high 97 rushing yards and 112 passing yards.
