WILMINGTON, Ohio – One day into the hours-long standoff between law enforcement and a Columbus man that resulted in the man’s death, an employee of a nearby business reflected on what she saw.
Authorities say 42-year-old Ricky Schieffer fled north on Interstate 71 after trying to break into an FBI office in Cincinnati Thursday morning. He stopped the vehicle in the Wilmington area and exchanged gunfire with authorities, which was witnessed by nearby businesses.

Holly Carpenter said she was doing her job when she noticed something wasn’t right.

Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers were crewed in pursuit of Siren Schiffer. After a lengthy standoff, law enforcement shot and killed the suspect.
Carpenter was on the road when the incident happened outside of Wilmington.
“It’s very quiet,” she said of the rural community.

She said she feels safe knowing authorities have the suspect in custody.
“I knew he wasn’t going to get here until he ran through the cornfield, and running through the cornfield is not a good time,” she said. “And I thought it was impossible to pass through this cornfield.”
Carpenter knows she can’t stay around, so she closes shop early.
“There will be no customers and it will be safer to go a little farther,” Carpenter said.
She hopes things will continue on the quiet side.

“I mean, I feel like it’s calming,” she said. “What are the chances of something happening again soon?”
Public records show Schiffer’s most recent address was in Columbus.
Neither the FBI nor the Ohio State Highway Patrol are commenting further on the case.
