Sophia Bell, 17, of San Rafael, completed the Vikingsholm Lake Tahoe crossing in record time, managing the 10.6-mile swim in 4 hours, 27 minutes, 17 seconds. Bell, a North Bay Aquatics Club swimmer, faced the challenge of her first marathon earlier this week. Vikingsholm Crossing is the shortest of the three majors considered to hold the Tahoe Triple Crown.
Bell’s time was the fastest for a woman, just 6 minutes shy of the overall record.
The first hour of swimming is done in the dark and the event website warns that the main swim takes 5 to 8 hours. The swim begins at Cave Rock in Nevada and ends at Emerald Bay on the California side of Lake Tahoe. Competitors are not allowed to wear wet clothes and are not allowed to touch the support boat. During the race, food and water will be thrown to the swimmer.
Bell, who is committed to swim for UC San Diego, began crossing at 3:34 a.m. with support staff in a nearby boat, including her father, Scott, who spent the entire time with her. North Bay teammate Alecia Root and her father, Stephen Root — both of Mill Valley — were part of the support group and each swam with Bell for about an hour.

The best women’s bocce players from across California gathered in San Rafael on Aug. 6 for a regional doubles tournament, and one Marin couple came out on top. Representing the host Marine Bocce Federation, San Rafael’s Julie Nunes and San Anselmo’s Jolene Kramer went 6-0 in the United States Bocce Federation women’s doubles tournament.
Nunes and Kramer defend their 2021 titles at this event held at the Albert Park facility. Stockton’s Amy Fujii and Martha Crossley beat Martinez 12-9 in the finals. There were 16 teams entered with players from Bocce clubs in Martinez, Stockton, Antioch, Los Gatos, Felton, Lompoc, Grass Valley, Santa Barbara and more.
Nunes is a 17-year boxer, retired nurse and director of risk management. A 10-year player, Kramer is a chemical engineer and business owner who has won two national bocce championships. In June, she won a bronze medal at the U.S. Boxing Federation Accuracy Shooting Championships.
