The PC hardware monitor uses the technology found in Tricorder

Visually impressive hardware control that [Mangy_Dog] It may look like something out of the ordinary put together for a new custom PC build soon. Because of the incredible amount of time and effort [Mangy_Dog] He made his own progress Star Trek: Voyager tricorder, it is not surprising that he decided to reuse the graphics chip and the microcontroller. But while familiar hardware helped jumpstart this build, this wasn’t a weekend project.

He’s been working on it steadily for several months now, and entered the 2022 Sci-Fi competition in April. Obviously he couldn’t finish it before the competition deadline, but judging by the end result, we’re glad to see him through.

Of course, in a project like this, hardware is only half the battle. In the video below, [Mangy_Dog] It explains the challenges of creating not only the firmware that runs on the monitor, but also the corresponding PC-side application. This includes modifying existing libraries to add support for device-specific flash storage arrangements and extracting relevant system state information from the operating system to various customizable widgets.

While the project is impressive, [Mangy_Dog] He said it’s not over yet. The second hardware and software revision solves a number of issues and adds new capabilities, and given the high level of polish we’ve come to expect from its creation, we’re not surprised.
