East Rutherford, NJ – Fashionable Schooner followed in her mother’s footsteps as the Hambletonian Oaks winner, sprinting to the lead from the 10th post and never looked back to win Saturday’s (Aug. 6) $500,000 3-year-old female trotter by 2-1/4 lengths in 1:51.2 at Meadowlands. Rose Coco Chanel finished second ahead of the fast closing Yanaba.
Fashion Schooner’s dam Broadway Schooner won the 2009 Hambletonian Oaks. Jim Campbell trained Broadway Schooner for Fashion Farms, and the duo returned to the winner’s circle Saturday with the homebred Fashion Schooner.
“That’s what it’s all about,” says Fashion Farm owner Jules Siegel of watching the fashion schooner replicate her mother’s success. “His mother is still here, and she is producing what we need.”
Tim Tetrick guided Fashion Schooner to his third straight Oaks win, tying him with Glenn Garnsey and Ron Pearce for third all-time. Yannick Gingras holds the record with six, followed by Berndt Lindstedt with four.
After 7-5 favorite Warrawee Xenia got going at the start, Fashion Schooner used a :26.1 opening quarter to take the lead from Mon Cheval, then trailed the field at the half in :55.1 and three quarters in 1:23.1.
“I know the first quarter was fast, but my honey was fierce and she got off on the right foot and felt great,” Tetrick said. “She had no pressure; So the rest of the work was on her.
“When it turned on :55 (at the half), I was happy. After that, I let her move on and never let anyone get too close. And you know what? We have finished the work,” he said.
The fashion schooner has won five of eight races this year. Her wins include the New Jersey Sire Stakes Championship and the Delvin Miller Memorial Class. She won five of 11 starts in her career and earned $468,462.
Due to illness, she was 2 years old and was limited to only three races.
“You don’t know how good it’s going to be, but if everything goes right for her, she showed us last year that she has the ability to do it,” Campbell said heading into the finals.
Fashion Schooner, sent at 6-1, paid $14.00 to win.
