I started traveling solo in 2009 after I was laid off from my job.
My solo journey began during the last recession when I was laid off and moved abroad to South Korea. As an expat – having lived in different countries like South Africa and Germany – I realized that there are many opportunities to travel and see the world. I have traveled to over 50 countries so far, 30 of which have been solo trips.
I now live in Oman in the Middle East. I’m an English teacher by day and a travel blogger by night, documenting my travels and tips on a website I co-founded in 2012.
I love solo travel because I like to be in control of my plans. You have to do something with traveling with your friends or family. I love having the freedom and flexibility to decide if I want to wake up one day and chill at the pool or go out and have some adventures.
I also grew as an individual and learned a lot about myself. Traveling in general is an educational experience, but when you go somewhere new on your own, there’s real strength in that.
